In celebration for National Poetry Day the Orewa Writers Group, a group I joined earlier this year, held its second annual Poetry on the Beach day. It is a day where you go along, make a donation and then get to write your poem on the sand. For me it was the first time I had really publicly “displayed” my work. I think the initial idea was to even film it with a drone, however the weather did not play nice. While it was sunny, there was a steady southerly which became blustery at times. Where I am, a southerly means its cold, being in the Southern Hemisphere and all.
But anyway, despite the weather we had about 22 people turn up to the event and even the local paper did a piece on it. The link for the full article in the “local matters” is here. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of my poem in the sand to share, but it appears that they captured a couple of others who attended.
The poems were submitted to be judged, and while I would be keen to at least be considered, I am happy that I just was able to participate. I have to say that writing in the sand, for it to be readable and not blown away by the wind, was time consuming. I was only able to really get down the first two stances before the time was up. I think next year I might have a go at writing a Haiku for the occasion. At least that way it would be shorter.
Here is the poem for your reading pleasure:
The Beach by Khrious El'Lion
Waves Cascade in Sunlit Sky
Salty sprays and seabirds fly
Diamonds sparkle on a Sapphire expanse
Forever performing a cosmic dance
Lovers walk hand in hand
Children's laughter echos upon the sand
Families enjoy shared platter
Souls are entwined forever after
The place eons pass and futures unfold
A space were memories are born and grow
The ebb and flow of tides from luna’s embrace
Provide rhythms to these sands,
forever a spiritual place
